50th anniversary of RIMYI, Pune, India.

On 19 January 1975, the RIMYI (Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute) was inaugurated in Pune, India. To mark the 50th anniversary of this internationally renowned institute, a special 12-day programme was shared with some 250 participants from many countries. A small Belgian delegation was also present.

Prashant Iyengar inaugurated the programme. He is one of the few people to have seen the birth of this edifice and who is still alive today. His testimony shows the evolution and changes that have taken place over the last 50 years. Back then, Hanumam could be seen at the top of the building from the Shivajinagar railway station... since then, the buildings have grown on all sides! In 1975, the Model Colony area had no tarmac roads... A few dozen people attended classes at the institute. Prashant and Geeta used to give private lessons.

The whole Rimyi team took us on a journey through the rainbow of yoga, opening up perspectives, decompartmentalising approaches and understanding of the body, breath and mind. The celebrations ended with a tribunal in which the main actors, Prashantji, Abhijata and Raya, made us reflect on the essence of yoga and Iyengar yoga in particular.

Prashantji reminded us that ‘yoga is not a destination but a process’.
